A sliver of light

After seeing it done a few times, I’ve always wanted to try my luck at getting a ball in motion. One day in Clear Lake, I took advantage of a sliver of light between the mound and home plate.

In with a splash

Summer arrived in scorching fashion this week, pushing high temperatures in North Iowa to the mid 90s. Of course this means finding the seasonal ‘hot temps’ pic.

A father’s day tie?

A necktie is one of the most popular gifts received on Father’s Day. But for Tim Johnson of Mason City, there doesn’t need to be a special day to receive a tie. He owns more than 130, and has never received one on Father’s Day.

He said he doesn’t believe in the idea that one day of the year should be reserved for recognizing people. He said father’s day, mother’s day, grandparent’s day, etc. should be celebrated each day.

Pitching in the rain

Rain or not, this was one of my favorite assignments so far in my first month at the Globe Gazette.

Play of the week

I was fully expecting another rain-soaked venture out to Roosevelt Stadium today in Mason City to shoot another baseball game under the storm clouds. The rain stopped shortly after I got there, however, and Mason City swept No. 7 Marshalltown in a double-header.

This play is one of those I’d expect to see at the MLB level. The second baseman dove to stop the ground ball (smacking his face into the ground in doing so), fielded the ball and lobbed it up to the shortstop at second. Unfortunately the runner was called safe, but it was a remarkable defensive stop for a high school junior.
